Expert ISO consulting
for scrap recyclers
Since 1993, Kantner & Company has helped dozens of scrap recycling firms just like yours meet their ISO system challenges. We know the industry – we know the ISO ropes – we can help you, too!
Option 1: On-site implementation assistance
On-site consulting assistance is the "traditional" approach to helping you implement the type of management system that meets your needs:
- ISO 9001 (quality management)
- ISO 14001 (environmental management)
- OHSAS 18001 (safety management)
- Scrap/QES (integrated quality / environmental / safety management)
Using our ability and experience, and with unparalleled excellence, we work with you to design and implement the appropriate system that:
- Is specific to scrap recycling,
- Fits your firm precisely (no two scrap recycling firms are alike),
- Meets your needs,
- Is easy to understand and operate yourself,
- Is cost-effective to run, and
- Passes certification audit and continues to pass surveillance audits long after we are gone.
For details on the generic implementation steps, check here. This is, however, a generic approach; we tailor it to fit the situation of each unique client.
We start with on-site System Survey. This is a detailed review of your existing processes (yard, office, management). From this we develop
- A list of noncompliances to the Standard(s);
- A detailed Implementation Plan that maps the project all the way to successful registration audit.
We also identify the skills and resources needed to accomplish the job effectively. In some cases we provide all the resources and services. In others, we find we can build on
- Resources you already have, such as: machine operation instructions, health/safety plans, job descriptions, etc.;
- skills available on your staff, such as: training assistance, document drafting, etc.
We review the plan with you, obtain your agreement, and roll up our sleeves! Following the plan, we visit your site(s) once per month. Each monthly visit runs 2-4 days, depending on project size and scope. During these visits we work with key people to complete the steps on the implementation plan. At the end of each visit we leave with you a short list of tasks to accomplish before the next visit.
During consulting visits we work with as much flexibility as we can. We understand that you have a business to operate and can't simply shut down ‘while we do ISO'. We work around the schedules of busy people, adapt our work plan to accommodate the unforeseen, and in every way possible strive to help you make concrete progress on the ISO process while minimizing impact on daily routine work.
After each visit we send you a written report that lists
- Project status,
- Things accomplished;
- Things to do;
- upcoming visit schedule;
- Documentation of advice and guidance that we have given during the visit.
For credit-approved clients, we invoice on-site visits (daily consulting rate plus travel costs) on net-30 day terms.

For clients that have significant internal resources available (i.e. skilled people with available time), we offer Distance Consulting assistance programs that are considerably less expensive than on-site consulting.

With distance consulting, we usually make one visit to your site at the start of the project, to map out the plan and set the task schedule. We make one other visit at the end, just prior to certification audit, to review the system and ensure its readiness.
In between, we work and interact with you via phone, fax, and email, guiding your work as you progress through the implementation steps. We review documents, answer questions, deal with implementation and compliance issues. Barring acts of God, we guarantee responses to questions within 24 business hours.
The cost / payment structure for distance consulting is a mix of our standard daily rate for on-site visits, and a flat monthly fee for unlimited distance assistance.
Our Scrap/QES management system program provides you with all the tools and guidance you need to develop, design, implement, audit, and prepare your ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 / OHSAS 18001 compliant system for certification audit. Full details here.
Maybe you're thinking about going ISO. But before taking the plunge you want absolute specifics on how the process will go in your particular scrap recycling operation. Then our Scrap Recycling Management System Survey will get you the answers you need.
During this one-day on site visit, the Kantner & Company consultant reviews your operations from start to finish. At the end you get a written report that:
- Identifies potential conflicts with the ISO standard(s) you want to be certified to;
- Outlines potential solutions to these;
- Provides a specific step by step blueprint for your particular ISO implementation process;
- Includes an implementation time line and prospective costs.
Afterward you are under no obligation to proceed. You may even elect to go it alone. It's up to you! Whatever you decide, you'll have solid facts about your own organization as it relates to the international quality, environmental, and/or safety standards. You'll be able to make informed decisions about whether, and how, to go forward. And you'll learn a lot.
